LED Instrument Light Kit /5 Green T/S
At our customer's request, we have put together a bulb kit with the individual led bulbs of the appropriate color & size to retrofit a stock /5 Instrument gauge.
In order to replace the red incandescent charge light with a led, we have built a resistor cluster "dongle" that piggybacks onto the charge light socket and provides the required resistance to get the alternator excited. On the /5s, the turn indicator bulb is wired 2-way, similar to the 1981-95 turn indicator circuit. To install a LED bulb in the turn indicator circuit, a ground connection is required. We have also built a twin wire w/ diode replacement harness for the turn indicator. It consists of 2 properly color coded wires with diodes and a spade connector on the bulb end, and properly tinned ends on the other end to connect into the existing connector board. It also includes a ground wire for the other side of the turn indicator bulb that connects to a ground at the instrument. Installation instructions are included. The kit consists of 5 small bulbs for the instrument lights and indicators, 1 large LED bulb for the charge indicator, 1 large LED bulb for the turn indicator, and 1 large LED bulb for the parking light; 8 LED bulbs in total. This is a retro-fit kit, and assembly is required, as well as some modification of the oil & neutral sockets, and in some cases, the parking light.
Please Note: This is not a "PLUG & PLAY" some modifications will be necessary.
This
kit consists of the properly sized LED bulbs, in the correct color for
your gauges. YOU will have to dig into the snake farm of your existing
50 year old headlight bucket wiring. If one of your lights is currently
not working; you will need to diagnose that. Changing from
incandescent bulb to LED will not fix any existing electrical problems.
The kit includes a new wiring harness for the turn indicator. That
means you have to access your connector block and replace the stock
wires with new ones. Disturbing any of this old stuff involves a
certain amount of risk that screws will strip, connectors will break or
separate and need to be replaced.
Install case study example:
4 Kits installed on 4 different bikes to check for fitment & function. Two of the four bikes had no parking light bulb socket, (larger BA9 size) and no wires to connect to the socket. Two of these parking lights also had the early style/ no socket: and simply sit on 2 small posts and fit through a hole in the reflector. In order to install LED bulbs in these parking lights - you will need to file the hole in your reflector to get the bulb to fit through. Two of the bikes had issues with the high beam indicator: both had the headlight bulb plug re-wired at some point, and on one bike - the high beam indicator stayed on all the time, on the other - it didn't come on at all. Both bikes arrived in this condition - it is not a action of installing an LED bulb. Two of the bikes had very bad small insulated sockets (neutral and oil lights) These small sockets are becoming NLA. Be prepared to replace damaged or corroded stuff in your headlight bucket. Working instruments, with no headlight bucket fires from old wire shorts is a good thing.
This Kit comes with the following:
5 small LED bulbs:
- Blue High Beam
- Amber Neutral
- Amber Oil
- 2 x White Instrument Illumination
- Red Charging System
- Green Turn Indicator
- White Parking Light
The OEM turn indicators has the blue w/bk and blue w/red wires coming into to the two connectors on the bulb socket. A bulb will function 2-way like this, a LED WILL NOT. What we have done is build a new wiring pair with properly colored wires and additional diodes to bring the blue turn wires into the same connector, and added a brown ground wire to the other connector on the bulb for a ground. You simply disconnect your existing turn indicators wiring pair, and install the new replacement. The bare ends of the harness are properly tinned to insert in the connector block.
Note: You
will need to modify your 2 small, insulated BA7 sockets; neutral and
oil indicators. You need to trim off the (about 2mm) top plastic rim of
the insulated socket, to get the LED bulb socket to insert deep enough
on installation. This does not affect the function of the bulb socket
in any way. You may also need to modify your stock parking
light/headlight reflector assembly.
