VAPE /6, /7 107mm Complete System
The VAPE (pronounced VaahPeh) is a top quality, European product that
will “modernize” the electrical systems on your classic BMW, providing
improved reliability, performance as well as passive and active safety.
This set will replace the entire charging and ignition system with
reliable, modern components.
This set consists of a complete system including Rotor, Stator, Coil-CDI, Regulator, and other hardware. Replaces the stock 12V alternator (including diode plate and regulator) as well as all ignition parts (points or hall element). There is no need for changes to the engine casing. This D/C system will run head lights, tail lights, turn signals and charge the battery. It is a magnet based alternator with integrated solid state ignition; output at 12V/190W DC. The alternator is brushless and there are no parts to wear out, making this system maintenance free.

- Pre-assembled Stator Rotor
- Flywheel (rotor)
- Electronic Advance Unit
- Regulator/Rectified
- Twin Ignition Coils
- Relay with cables
- Rotor bolts M8 with washer
- Three M5 screws
- Installation cables/hardware
The VAPE ignition system is a magneto based generator with integrated,
fully electronic ignition. It is equipped with a tiny AC regulator to
run lighting equipment, thus eliminating the need to run a battery. VAPE
external flywheel type ignitions are an analog type, CDI ignition with
80-100 watts of 12-volt lighting capacity capable of delivering up to
40,000 volts.
Advantages
- Does not require changes on crankcase or any other permanent modifications
- Timing may now be fine tuned without taking the rotor off by turning body in long holes
- Solid state ignition and advance
- Reliable ignition with solid spark
- Improved starting performance, better fuel burning
- Eliminates points, condenser, centrifugal advance and upgrades the charging system
- The system is technically capable of running without battery
Important note:
- VAPE instructions - "not for BMW models with lightened flywheel" such as e.g. aluminum flywheels. VAPE systems are exclusively destined to replace stock ignition systems in classic and vintage motorcycles whose engine characteristics have not been modified aftermarket.
- Please do not use any spark amplifying cables, this will disturb the system and possibly damage it
- Do not use spark plugs with an internal suppression resistor (e.g. spark plugs coded with an "R" for resistor)
- Larger cc BMW with older e-starter might have starting problems with this systems. The starter does not reach the needed starting revs for the engine to start. For this reason the R90S and R100 models are excluded from fitment.
Additional information:
- For /6 models manufactured after 09/75, then Airheads up to the 1978 model year (excluding R90S and R100 variants)1
- Does not support existing electronic revolution counter, rev-meter/tachometer
- Only 190 watts, which is more than adequate but less electric power than the stock alternator
1The
diameter of the original alternator stator was changed from 105mm to
107mm in 09/75. If you are unsure which version you have, we suggest
removing the alternator stator and carefully measuring the diameter
across the part of the stator that makes contact with and is fitted to
the timing cover.
